Scientists researching sleeping habits have discovered that people tend to fall into sleep more quickly when swinging in a hammock – and achieve better quality sleep – particularly if they are gently swayed.
Research carried out at the University of Geneva, Switzerland by Dr Michel Muhlethaler, had volunteers take two 45-minute naps, first when the hammock was swinging and then again when it was still. Their brain activity was monitored and the scientists found that all the volunteers fell asleep more quickly when they were being rocked,
"We observed a faster transition to sleep in each and every subject in the swinging condition,"
The nature of their sleep also differed when being rocked: The amount of time spent in a dreamless stage called N2, which takes place soon after we fall asleep increased and the swaying also encouraged a deeper stage of sleep.
It has been suggested that the gentle swaying reminds the human mind of the developmental stages of gestation in the womb and from this association lying in a hammock is an ideal way to counter stress and achieve a sublime state of relaxation.
